Wrinkle Relaxers,
Explained

GRACE LIGHT GUIDE

Your movement. Your expression. A more informed plan.

Botox. Dysport. Xeomin. Tox. Neurotoxin. Wrinkle relaxer. The language can make a straightforward idea feel complicated. This guide starts somewhere simpler: which muscles are creating the movement, what happens when we soften that signal, and how do we preserve an expression that still feels like you?

FIND YOUR STARTING POINT

Follow the movement.

Wrinkle relaxers are not simply “for wrinkles.” They temporarily change selected muscle activity. Choose the part of the conversation you want to understand, or read the guide from beginning to end.

MOVEMENT
Why does this line appear?
Dynamic vs. static lines

Dynamic lines begin with movement.
A line that deepens when you frown, squint, smile, or lift your brows has a muscular component. If the crease remains when the face is at rest, the skin itself may need attention too.
PRODUCT
BOTOX, DYSPORT, or XEOMIN?
Same category · product-specific formulations
All three are botulinum toxin type A products.
BOTOX Cosmetic contains onabotulinumtoxinA, DYSPORT contains abobotulinumtoxinA, and XEOMIN contains incobotulinumtoxinA. Their formulations, labeled uses, dosing, and potency units are product-specific. Units should never be treated as directly interchangeable across brands.
PLACEMENT
Which muscle changes the effect?
Forehead · glabella · eyes · selected advanced uses
Anatomy matters more than a treatment menu.
The same “forehead wrinkle” can sit within a different balance of elevator and depressor muscles from one person to another. Placement is a medical anatomy decision, not a template.
EXPECTATIONS
How much movement should remain?
Natural is a treatment decision

“Natural” is not one fixed dose.
Some people want very soft movement. Others want more expression. The goal is to agree on the degree of relaxation before treatment, not after.

FIRST, DEFINE THE CATEGORY

A wrinkle relaxer changes movement.

Botulinum toxin temporarily reduces the nerve signal that tells selected muscles to contract as strongly. In aesthetics, that can soften lines created or deepened by repeated facial expression.

That makes wrinkle relaxers fundamentally different from dermal filler, which adds volume or structural support, and from laser, microneedling, peels, or radiofrequency treatments, which act on the skin itself.

FRAMING

The useful question is not “how many units do I need?”

A BETTER QUESTION

Which movement are we trying to change, and how much of it do I want to keep?

HOW THEY WORK

Less Movement. Softer Lines.

Your expressions are part of what makes your face yours. But over time, repeated movements like smiling, squinting, frowning and raising your eyebrows can create visible lines in the skin.

Wrinkle relaxers temporarily reduce the signals that cause selected muscles to contract. As the targeted movement softens, the skin above it can appear smoother and more rested.

Target the Movement

Your provider identifies the specific muscles contributing to the concern.

Soften the Pull

A carefully selected amount of product temporarily reduces movement in those muscles.

Preserve Expression

Thoughtful placement allows untreated muscles to continue moving naturally.

The goal is less unwanted movement, not no movement at all.

MEET THE PRODUCTS

Same category. Product-specific rules.

BOTOX Cosmetic, DYSPORT, and XEOMIN all use botulinum toxin type A, but they are distinct prescription products. Their approved indications, labeling, formulations, and potency units should be understood product by product.

OnabotulinumtoxinA

BOTOX Cosmetic

PRESCRIPTION MEDICINE

BOTULINUM TOXIN TYPE A

MUSCLE RELAXATION

BOTOX Cosmetic is FDA approved to temporarily improve moderate-to-severe frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead lines, and platysma bands in adults.

The label tells you what has been specifically reviewed and approved. It does not mean every aesthetic use outside those areas is automatically inappropriate; off-label prescribing is a separate medical conversation that should be disclosed and explained.

THINK OF IT AS

A product with labeled uses, not a universal “tox unit.”

ASK YOUR PROVIDER

Which muscle are we treating, and is this use on-label or off-label for BOTOX Cosmetic?

02

AbobotulinumtoxinA

DYSPORT

PRESCRIPTION MEDICINE

BOTULINUM TOXIN TYPE A

GLABELLAR LINES

DYSPORT is FDA approved for the temporary improvement of moderate-to-severe glabellar lines associated with procerus and corrugator muscle activity in adults younger than 65.

Its prescribing information also makes the dosing distinction explicit: DYSPORT potency units are product-specific and are not interchangeable with the units of another botulinum toxin preparation.

THINK OF IT AS

A different unit scale does not mean “more toxin.” It means a different product-specific dosing system.

ASK YOUR PROVIDER

Why are you recommending DYSPORT for my movement pattern, and how does its dosing differ from the other products you use?

IncobotulinumtoxinA

XEOMIN

PRESCRIPTION MEDICINE

BOTULINUM TOXIN TYPE A

UPPER FACIAL LINES

XEOMIN is FDA approved for temporary improvement in moderate-to-severe upper facial lines in adults: glabellar lines, horizontal forehead lines, and lateral canthal lines.

XEOMIN’s prescribing information also makes an important point for any consumer comparing brands: its potency units are specific to XEOMIN and cannot be compared or converted directly into units of another botulinum toxin product.

KEEP CLEAR

Same category does not mean interchangeable dosing.

ASK YOUR PROVIDER

Why are you recommending XEOMIN for my movement pattern, and how will we decide how much expression to preserve?

Wrinkle relaxers can do more than soften forehead lines. Thoughtful placement may address concerns throughout the face, jawline and neck.

Upper Face
Forehead lines, frown lines, crow’s feet and brow balance

Mid and Lower Face
Bunny lines, gummy smile, lip flip, lip lines, downturned mouth corners and chin dimpling

Jawline and Neck
Prominent masseter muscles, jaw tension, jawline balance and visible neck bands

Some applications may be considered off-label. Your provider will determine which treatment areas are appropriate based on your anatomy, goals and medical history.

What Can Wrinkle Relaxers Treat?

TREATMENT AREAS

READ THE EVIDENCE

Better anatomy creates better expectations.

Wrinkle relaxers are well established. The nuance is not whether botulinum toxin can reduce muscle activity. It is how a product is used, what outcome is realistic, and what the line is actually made of.

Dynamic lines
Botulinum toxin is strongest conceptually when repeated muscle contraction is a major driver of the visible line.
Duration
Botulinum toxin effects commonly last around three to four months, although duration varies by product, area, dose, muscle activity, and person.
Natural expression
Natural-looking treatment depends on weakening selected muscles without unnecessarily affecting surrounding movement. Dose and anatomy matter.
Static lines
A crease visible at rest may soften as repeated folding is reduced, but skin quality, collagen loss, and photodamage can remain separate targets.

KEEP THE MECHANISMS CLEAR

Tox, filler, or skin treatment?

These categories can complement one another, but they do different jobs. Use this as a conversation aid, not a self-diagnosis tool.

THE GRACE LIGHT PERSPECTIVE

Natural is a treatment philosophy.

The goal is not to eliminate evidence that your face moves. It is to decide which movement is contributing to a concern and how much softening feels right for you.

A strong result can still smile, lift a brow, look skeptical, laugh, and look like you. The treatment should serve the expression, not erase it.

FROM MOVEMENT TO A PERSONAL PLAN

Understand first. Treat second.

01

Name the expression

Show us the line when it happens. Frown, smile, squint, or raise your brows. Movement is part of the assessment.

02

Identify the muscle

We connect the visible effect to the anatomy creating it and consider how that muscle balances with the surrounding face.

03

Choose the product + plan

Understand which product is being recommended, whether the use is on-label or off-label, and how much movement the plan intends to preserve.

04

Reassess the result

Evaluate the expression after the treatment has settled before deciding whether anything should be repeated, adjusted, or left alone.

CONSULTATION COMPANION

Bring your expression.

You do not need to arrive knowing your units, product, or injection pattern. Better questions make a better consultation.

Is this line mostly movement, or is it etched into the skin too?

That distinction helps clarify whether wrinkle relaxer alone makes sense or whether a skin-quality treatment may eventually deserve consideration too.

Why BOTOX, DYSPORT, or XEOMIN in my case?

Ask for the recommendation in terms of current product labeling, your movement pattern, treatment history, anatomy, prior response, and desired result rather than brand preference alone.

Is this use FDA approved or off-label?

Off-label use is common across medicine, but it should be explained so you understand the rationale, evidence, and product-specific labeling.

How much movement are we trying to keep?

“Natural” means different things to different people. Decide whether you want subtle softening, very limited movement, or something in between.

Why can’t you tell me my exact dose before seeing me move?

Muscle strength, anatomy, asymmetry, product, treatment history, and your desired amount of movement all affect an individualized dose.

What risks should I understand?

Discuss common injection effects such as bruising, swelling, soreness, and headache, as well as product-specific contraindications, unintended nearby muscle weakness, and the boxed warning for possible distant spread of toxin effect.

What if I do nothing today?

You are allowed to leave with information. Wrinkle relaxers are elective. Understanding the mechanism does not obligate you to treat it.

CONFIDENCE IN EVERY LIGHT

Your face already knows
how to move.

Our job is to understand which movement you want to soften, how much expression you want to keep, and whether a wrinkle relaxer is actually the right tool. Start with the question. The next step is yours.
